Design Philosophy for Large Vertical Storage Tanks

Large vertical storage tanks are engineering structures, not standardized products.
Our design philosophy focuses on safety, compliance, durability, and constructability, ensuring that every tank performs reliably throughout its service life.

Each tank is designed based on:

  • Project-specific operating conditions
  • Applicable international design standards
  • Actual construction and installation methods

Engineering safety and long-term reliability are always prioritized over cost reduction.

Applicable Design Codes and Standards

We design large vertical storage tanks in strict accordance with internationally recognized standards, including but not limited to:

  • API 650 – Welded Tanks for Oil Storage
  • EN 14015 – Aboveground Storage Tanks
  • GB 50341 – Chinese Code for Vertical Cylindrical Steel Tanks

Design standards are selected based on:

  • Project location
  • Stored medium
  • Client and regulatory requirements

Each design is fully compliant with the selected code, ensuring structural integrity and regulatory acceptance.

Design Inputs and Engineering Parameters

Accurate tank design begins with clearly defined technical inputs. Key design parameters include:

  • Tank capacity, diameter, and height
  • Stored liquid properties and operating temperature
  • Design pressure and vacuum conditions
  • Wind load, seismic load, and snow load
  • Corrosion allowance and service environment
  • Required service life and inspection class

These parameters form the basis for all structural calculations and material selection.

Structural Design and Thickness Calculation

Tank shell, bottom, and roof thickness are determined through detailed engineering calculations in accordance with the selected design code.

Our structural design process includes:

  • Shell course thickness calculation
  • Bottom plate and annular plate design
  • Wind girder and stiffener design
  • Roof structure load analysis

All thickness values are verified to meet or exceed minimum code requirements.

Every plate thickness is defined by calculation, not assumption.
